BARTON CREEK OPUTPOST

Just 20 minutes from our location is the very best camping area around Cayo. No matter if you are pitching your tent on the ground of using a roof top mount, this is the place to camp out.

Barton Creek Outpost is nestled in the foothills of Belize's Mountain Pine Ridge and on the outskirts of an Old World
Mennonite community in western Belize.

The most common word we hear to describe the Outpost is "paradise". We offer free camping for those backpacking with their own gear, you can rent camping gear on site or contact us about other lodging options. There are plenty of creek-side hammocks, a small book exchange and diverse botanical gardens that make for great bird watching.

If you are seeking some adventure we
have free jungle hikes and we work with the best local tour companies offering expeditions to remote waterfalls, Maya ruins, horseback riding, river canoeing and cave exploring.

Because we cater to the backpacking and camping traveler we specialize in
getting you on off the beaten track, inexpensive tours and we can usually help you book tours cheaper than you can on your own. When it's time to eat you will be impressed by the excellent home cooked meals we serve three times a day.

MACAL RIVER CAMP

A short fifteen minute drive from our location, is this jungle/riverside camp that we highly recommend to all of our LAND ROVER visitors whether they are staying for a day, a week, etc.

High above the meandering river where cool breezes rustle the towering trees of a pristine rainforest sits the Macal River Camp, Chaa Creek’s choice for those visitors wishing to get that much closer to nature.

Every effort has been made to create a true jungle experience without relinquishing comfort and safety. Here at the Macal River Camp you can experience nature much as the original Maya inhabitants or early settlers did – with little of the distraction or noises of civilisation. It is a tranquil, peaceful location that brings home the beauty and vibrant life of Belize’s rainforest and rivers.
Wake to the sound of myriad tropical birds beginning their day, enjoy a hearty breakfast from the camp’s home style kitchen and take a journey of discovery along the miles of trails through Chaa Creek’s sprawling nature reserve. The walk above the Macal River to the fascinating Maya Medicinal Plant Trail is beautiful, and other hiking, birding and mountain biking possibilities are, well, endless. Chaa Creek’s highly regarded stables are also within hiking distance, or we can bring the horses to you. Whichever means of rustic transport you choose, keep your eyes open for peccaries, tapir, armadillos, deer, monkeys, toucans, parrots and a host of other exotic animals inhabiting the rainforest.
Also within easy hiking distance are Chaa Creek’s world famous Butterfly Farm, Natural History Centre, and scheduled day tours to the impressive Maya pyramid at Xunantunich, and the huge ancient Maya cities of  Caracol and Tikal. There are also regular excursions to airy Mountain Pine Ridge, the Chumpiate Maya Cave, and other Western Belize attractions.
Of course, you may want to hang around camp to relax, grab one of the canoes or just have a swim in the Macal River, surprisingly safe for being so pristine.
